Summary

In the year 1987 Hasbro designers moved from established Cobra color schemes and into the "Violet" era. From here it only got worse and violet gave way to the horrors of day-glow neon and ridiculous monster concepts.

This project is an effort to right the wrongs done to Cobra and make them appear a more unified and cohesive force. The majority of figures and vehicles from 1987 and later will be re-colored into more appropriate palettes to make them better fit the image of Cobra. Figures will all be actual repaints as time allows, and until each figure is ready placeholder pictures will be shown with the intended colors.

Due to issues of cost and storage space, most vehicles will be shown as representations re-colored with an art program rather than actual painted vehicles. i have tried as much as possible to keep the original colors of the stickers so existing repro stickers can be used for customs. I will in some cases recolor stickers to black if needed, since this color of sticker is easy to make on a home printer with good results.

Considerable time has been spent going over the figures and vehicles, sorting out the original color schemes and categorizing them in a way that everything fit together and made sense. From this came a final list of color palettes, each with its own requirements and purpose, so that each palette became a category to which certain figures or vehicles would fit.

Once the proper colors of each figure are determined a rough draft of the paint scheme is worked up with an art program to show an approximation of what the figure or vehicle will look like. Adjustments can be made at this stage to reach the optimal color arrangement before painting the actual figure or vehicle.

Below is the list of color schemes as used for this project. The colors of most vehicle drivers are unique from those used for ground troops, with an exception or two. Vehicles also have their own set of color palettes that will be listed separately when it is finalized.

Please Forgive the lack of design in this website, I may put together something prettier when I get more time.

Color Scheme Key

SCHEME: Name tag used for each color scheme.

PURPOSE: What type of soldier the color scheme is used to represent.

MODELS: Existing figures with this color scheme used as examples.

PRIMARY: The main color of the palette.

SECONDARIES: Secondary colors which can be optional to a limited degree.

SIGIL: Colors that can be used for the Cobra logo in a given palette. Some figures of a given palette were never shown with a Cobra logo to give an example of proper color (such as Motor-Viper). In these cases the logo color defaults to red. In the case of the logo going on a red background then the logo defaults to silver. In both of these instances the color will be marked with a "*"  in the Sigil entry.
